Triacastela

Triacastela is a municipality located in the province of Lugo in the region of Sarria and on the Camino de Santiago.

In the mid-nineteenth century it was called Triancastelaen, in several privileges it is cited with the name of "Triacastelle" or "Triacastelle Nova", other documents including the oldest pilgrims guide the "Códice Calixtino" figure "Triacastellus".

Several kings and members of the nobility had a relationship with the town. The greatest benefactor was King Alfonso IX (1188-1230), who is said to have even spent some time there. In the place of San Pedro de Ermo, was the monastery of San Pedro and San Pablo that was founded by Count Gatón del Bierzo.

On 919, King Ordoño II of León and his wife Queen Elvira Menéndez confirmed to the monastery and its abbot the donations that Count Gatón, queen's grandfather, had done and increased them with books and jewelry. He also granted the monastery the town of Ranimiro.
