Cloisters of Samos

There are two cloisters:

Built between 1685 and 1689 and has 3,000m² (54m. sideways), making it the largest in Spain. Known as “of Father Feijoo”, for having taken the Benedictine habit in this monastery in 1690, and is presided over by a statue of him, work of Francisco Asorey, from 1947. The style is an austere and simple combination of classicism and blacksmithism.: nine semicircular arches on each side on the ground floor, Doric columns on the first two floors and Ionic
in the windows of the third. The walls of the upper floor were
decorated with scenes from the life of Saint Benedict and are the work of Enrique Navarro, Celia Cortés and José Luis Rodríguez.

The Small Cloister The “of the Nereids” was built between 1539 and 1582 thanks to Monfortino Pedro Rodríguez, whose name appears in one of the keys of the southwestern band. It imitates the Gothic style and has curious decoration motifs, like the humorous inscription “What are you staring at, bobo?” in a key. The center of the cloister
occupies the baroque fountain of the Nereids, early eighteenth century.
